Jubilant members of Hinckley and Burbage Lions Club joined forces with Hinckley Squash & Racketball Club at a presentation evening to conclude the 2015/16 team season, and to celebrate raising money for club member Mark Langeveld.
Mark, a keen squash player, suffered a life changing back injury that has left him with limited movement in his legs.
Members of the club, in conjunction with Hinckley and Burbage Lions Club, staged a fundraising effort, including a 24-hour squashathon, with the aim of raising £5,000 towards his treatment.
The event was so successful, that the sum raised was far in excess of that and, Mark was presented with the final total – a cheque for a massive £12,402!
He has decided that after part of the cash was used to buy a specially adapted wheelchair for him to carry on playing the game he loves, some will be donated to two spinal injury charities who have helped him on the long road back to recovery.
After the handover by Robin Wilson of Hinckley and Burbage Lions, Mark made a heartfelt speech thanking everyone for their contributions.
He then handed over a commemorative plaque club to mark the achievements of the members who took part in the 24 hour squash challenge which proved another smash hit for the go-ahead Tungsten Park outfit.
Robin Wilson of Hinckley and Burbage Lions Club, left hands over the cheque to Mark Langeveld.
