LMC 3  Coventry Lord Mayor Councillor Lindsley Harvard’s Nominated Charities, Alzheimer’s Society and University of Warwick Medical School Cancer Research Department, were both given a boost by receiving a donation of £2,002 by Lions Club of Coventry Godiva.

Godiva Lions President Lion Sharan Walia and members of the Lions Club of Coventry Godiva to the presentation ceremony held in the Hospitality suite at the Council House on Thursday 21 July 2016, also attended by representatives of the two charities. The Lord Mayor outlined the work of his nominated charities from his personal experience and commended their contribution to improving lives of people in our communities.

“I am extremely grateful to the Godiva Lions Club for raising these funds and donating them to these charities” said the Lord Mayor. “I have seen first hand what Alzheimer can do to the family as it happened to my father. I have also had many family and friends who have contracted cancer in its various forms.”

He added, “But I have also seen first hand the great work that Alzheimer’s Society do, especially the Centre in Stoke Green in Coventry, as well as the pioneering work that Cancer research are doing at the University of Warwick to detect cancer better. It is an ongoing struggle and they don’t get the funding they need, which is why it is so important to LMC 11receive donations like these and why we are very grateful”.

Lion President Sharan Walia said that Godiva Lions agreed to support these two charities, as both are high on the Government’s agenda. We look at opportunities to work closely with charities with a local focus where possible, since most of our funds are raised locally with the goodwill and generosity of our communities. It is these people and their friends and families who often are the real beneficiaries of the excellent work done by these charities.

Thanking Godiva Lions for their contribution, Alzheimer’s Society Operations Manager Janice LeTellier said, “there are about 3,500 people in Coventry living with dementia, and of course many of these are supported by friends and family so it affects many more people. We provide local services for local people, and in Coventry we offer a good range of services to help people living with dementia. The donation will be used to help support those people to live in their own homes and be part of community life as long as possible.”

LMC 12Community Fundraiser for Warwick Cancer Research Centre thanked Godiva Lions for choosing to support them. She added, ”Every penny goes directly to cancer research taking place here at University of Warwick and University  Hospital (UHCW). Research is being carried out across a number of areas including, cell biology, cutting-edge imaging for faster diagnosis, creation and designing of new anti-cancer drugs and support for patients both during cancer treatment and beyond.

Your support will make areal difference, both to the people battling cancer today, and those who will face this fight in the future”.
